Knowledgebase-Eintrag #754 VirtualCD
'Ghost drives' shown in the Explorer after de-installing Virtual CD.
Virtual drives are still shown in the Explorer after Virtual CD has been de-installed.

Check the registry keys HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Enum\SCSI (Windows 9x/ME) resp. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\SCSI (Windows NT and higher) for entries like the following:

  • CdRom&Ven_H+H&Prod_CDROM_Drive&Rev_3.00 (Virtual CD v3)
  • CdRom&Ven_H+H&Prod_DVD-ROM_DVD-707B&Rev_4.00 (Virtual CD v4)
  • CdRom&Ven_VBE_HH&Prod_DVD-ROM_DVD-50D&Rev_5.00 (Virtual CD v5)
  • CdRom&Ven_OBVIOUS&Prod_DVD-ROM_MAGIC_62&Rev_6.00 (Virtual CD v6)
  • CdRom&Ven_VDRV&Prod_DVD-ROM_DVDR_F52&Rev_7.00 (Virtual CD v7)
  • CdRom&Ven_VXRV&Prod_DVD-RAM_DVDR_S50&Rev_8.00 (Virtual CD v8)
  • CdRom&Ven_VXDV&Prod_DVD-RAM_DVDR_S95&Rev_9.00 (Virtual CD v9)
  • CdRom&Ven_VXDV&Prod_BD-HD-DVDRAM_S15&Rev_10.0 (Virtual CD v10)

If the driver is still present, delete. For information on the required procedure, please see the following articles in our knowledge base:

The "ghost drives" should be gone after the next reboot.

Note: In NT-based systems, the entry can be deleted only by using regedt32.exe as the security privileges must be changed accordingly.
