How can I change the Virtual CD drive icons in Windows Explorer?
For Virtual CD v5 and higher: When the first virtual CD is inserted in a virtual CD drive which has not been used up until now, the virtual CD icon appears instead of the standard Windows Explorer icon.

The Virtual CD player automatically changes the drive icon to the Virtual CD icon. Since the Virtual CD player is started in the user context, all users have to be denied the corresponding right.

Note: Changing key permissions is only possible with NT based OS (Windows NT/2000/XP)!

  • Start the registry editor via Start -> Run -> regedit (Windows XP) or regedt32 (Windows NT/2000).
  • Browse to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\"drive letter"\DefaultIcon (whereby the "drive letter" is the relevant drive designator of the virtual drive).
  • Using a double-click on the the string "(default)", you can enter a different program or a DLL with icons.
The number after the comma corresponds to the desired icon. The counting goes from the first icon down and from left to right and begins with 0. *)
If you only want the CD-ROM default icon, leave the default value empty.
  • In addition you have to deny all users the right to set the value.
Show the permissions dialog by clicking Security -> Permissions (Windows NT/2000) resp. right click -> Permissions (Windows XP).
Deny the right "Set Value" to the user by clicking Advanced -> View/Edit.
  • After refreshing the Windows Explorer with F5 the new icon will be displayed.

After the next login the Virtual CD Player cannot automatically set the value to its default value anymore.

Tip: The label name can be changed in the same way under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\"drive letter"\DefaultLabel.

*) Question: Why is the default value a -155 instead of a 3 which would specify the corresponding icon?
ANSWER: A negative value specifies the resource ID and a positive refers to the position of the icon in the file. -155 is thus the corresponding resource ID for the position 3 of the icon within the file.

In Virtual CD v8 you can change the symbol (and label name) of an empty drive in the Virtual CD Settings -> Icons.

In Virtual CD v9 you can find this in the Drive Editor -> System Integration.

In Virtual CD v10 this setting has been moved to the Virtual CD Settings -> Explorer Integration.
